'The shop Mistress. Well, I could hardly keep calling myself the Master.'

What should have been a shock revelation came across, to most, as little more than the most obvious reveal in an episode full of obvious reveals (helped none by the trailer promoting Dark Water). For months fans have been discussing some wild theories on who Missy could turn out to be, and most linked her to the Master. But almost all those hoped it was too obvious a move for Moffat to pull -- alas, it was not!

FOXES TO APPEAR ON THE SHOW

Singer-Songwriter Louisa Rose-Allen, better known as 'Foxes', will be appearing in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who.

For the latest series, the artist will also be performing a song, the title of which is unknown at this point.

Of her appearance, she says: "I can't believe I'm actually going to be in an episode of Doctor Who! Especially as it all came about from a chance meeting. I was playing a gig and got chatting to the show's production team who'd been watching my performance. I was telling them how much I loved Doctor Who and next thing they invited me to be on it. I couldn't think of a better place to make my acting debut than on one of the UK's most iconic shows!"

Steven Moffat also stated: "We are completely thrilled that the amazingly talented Foxes is joining us on board... well, you'll see. Let's just say, the Doctor is finally catching up on his phone calls."

WHO AND SMITH PICK UP NTAs!

Doctor Who fans rejoiced last night as the show was crowned 'Most Popular Drama' at the National Television Awards, alongside Matt Smith who won for 'Most Popular Drama Performance'.

The awards have been running since 1995, and broadcast by ITV, considered to be the most prominent UK awards ceremony to be voted by the general public.

Who's victory in 'Most Popular Drama' included other nominations such as Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey and Broadchurch, whilst Matt Smith beat the likes of Maggie Smith, Martin Clunes and Miranda Hart - a category that is now shared by actors and actresses alike.

While Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat accepted the award for 'Most Popular Drama', Matt Smith was unable to attend the ceremony due to his currently-running performance in the musical adaptation of American Psycho. Making up for his absence, he still managed to send a rather eccentric thank you video, displayed at the ceremony itself:

NEW DOCTOR ANNOUNCED!

In a special BBC broadcast revealing the latest actor to take on the role, Peter Capaldi has been officially announced as the 12^th incarnation of the Doctor. 

At 55, the Glasgow-born actor’s age now equals that of William Hartnell. Capaldi is no stranger to television however, with his best-known role being Malcolm Tucker, the eccentric spin-doctor with a temper from the popular series The Thick of It. Other television credits include Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, The Vicar of Dibley and four-part series The Devil's Whore.

Interestingly, Capaldi's career already has ties with the Whoniverse, with previous roles such as Caecilius from the 2008 episode 'The Fires of Pompeii' and civil servant John Frobisher from Torchwood: Children of Earth proving this. His appearance in World War Z as the curiously titled 'W.H.O Doctor' continues to show that more people are taking notice of the actor's work.

As an actor, Capaldi's distinctive 'angry Scot' delivery suggests that Whovians will be treated to a sterner, wiser version of the Doctor, potentially boasting quite a temper. If this is the case, then it could give the programme a fresh new face distinct from the current actor, Matt Smith.

When discussing getting the part, Capaldi commented: "It's so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it's been so fantastic... Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can't wait to get started".

 

Claiming to be a life-long fan of Doctor Who, Capaldi stated his preparation for the role consisted of revising scripts from previous Doctor Who episodes, before writer and executive producer Steven Moffat had provided him with new material for his own incarnation.

However, even with all this exposure and attention, fans have not forgotten the man still currently in charge of the role. In a pre-recorded message, the current Doctor, Matt Smith, spoke to Capaldi: "I wish my successor all the best and say good lucky and good on you for getting it, because I know he's both a huge fans of the show and a really nice guy".

 

Whilst the shoes are certainly big to fill, the popular opinion definitely seems to be that the iconic role is in safe hands.

SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2013: THE DOCTOR IS IN THE HOUSE!

Amongst the constant ramblings of the latest Marvel movie, or the somewhat peculiar appearance from Metallica, it comes as no surprise that the Doctor Who panel still managed to wow audiences with its presence in anticipation of the programme’s 50^th anniversary.

To discuss the upcoming special, Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and series show-runner Stephen Moffat made a very welcome appearance in front of over 6,000 onlookers. Once their favourite Time lord took his seat, fans were treated to a short teaser trailer, hinting at some of the episode’s content. Judging by the audience's reaction, this will definitely be worth the wait.

Matt Smith, the man behind the icon for the past three years, also spoke a little on his upcoming departure. He said “I’m proud and grateful to be a part of it…I just wanted to say, thank you, for all your support”.

Amongst the panel discussions and teaser videos, fans were celebrating Doctor Who just as much, if not more, than the actors themselves. With the area teeming with cosplay enthusiasts resembling various Whovian characters (and certain box-shaped time machines) a sense of genuine love for the programme ran throughout the building. This was allegedly too much fun for Matt Smith to just sit and watch, who instead opted to don a Bart Simpson mask to walk amongst his admirers!

As one of the major appearances on the final day of San Diego Comic-Con 2013, Doctor Who certainly made an impact, but more importantly, gets us even more excited for the end of the year when we can all see the 50^th anniversary special!

MATT SMITH TO LEAVE DOCTOR WHO

As some fans have suspected for quite some time Matt Smith will hand over the TARDIS keys to a new Doctor at the end of this year. His final appearance will be the 2013 Christmas special. However, it is not yet known if this will be a two part story, with an episode broadcast on New Year’s Day.

In a BBC press release Matt said: “Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind-bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt”

Steven Moffat has also issued a statement. He said: Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently.

And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him –  sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt – bow ties were never cooler.

Of course, this isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now – all unknowing, just going about their business – is someone who's about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting!”

DOCTOR WHO CONFIRMED FOR EIGHTH SERIES

Steven Moffat has confirmed that Doctor Who will return for an eighth series. Speaking at the BAFTA TV Awards at London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, he told BANG Showbiz: "Series eight of 'Doctor Who' is absolutely, definitely confirmed. It is real and it's happening." While Matt Smith has previously declared he has no intention of leaving the show just yet, so far there has been no official confirmation that he will return.

Moffat also commented about the various rumours that had been flying around about the forthcoming 50th anniversary episode: "Normally I'm responsible for the disinformation and the rubbish rumours about Doctor Who episodes, but I haven't needed to for the 50th anniversary episode. People are spinning off the most amazing things – it's quite incredible! Some of them are actually quite good ideas, I might use them in the future. There have been some very creative rumours but I can't say which ones I'm actually going to use."

Well, we can't say we're surprised to hear that the Doctor will be returning. Given the appetite for the 50th episode, along with strong ratings for the current series it would seem madness for the Beeb to halt the show. Of course, no show is automatically approved for a new series – even Who has to get clearance!

DWM CONFIRMS - NO PAST DOCTORS!

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (issue #460 - on sale tomorrow) confirms that the only Doctor returning for the Fiftieth Anniversary episode is David Tennant. '...The other old Doctors will not be taking part,' the mag reports. It also confirms that, although Christopher Eccleston was approached to return, he turned the offer down. In conjunction with this from Steven Moffat, 'it is important you don't turn it into a fanfest. We can't make this all about looking backwards', it seems long-time fans of the show are in for a major disappointment.

So, is this to be a celebration of FIFTY years or just the last EIGHT? The latter is looking more and more likely...

The BBC have just released a new interview with show-runner, Steven Moffat, who talks about the rest of the current series of Doctor Who. Excerpts below...

When asked about the inspiration behind the Whisper Men (from the forthcoming The Name of the Doctor), he had this to say;

Having brought back two of the classics, the Ice Warriors and the Cybermen, this year we wanted a brand new monster to bring chills in the finale. And the thought of the stylish whispering almost faceless creatures was an idea that firstly scared me and that I thought would work well in an episode that looks forward and back.

Why the change of the look of the Cybermen?

One of the things that the Cybermen historically like to do before involving themselves in a military campaign is run up a new outfit. Throughout the classic series they always changed their appearance and we've been very consistent with them. I thought it was time they went back to their tailor and had a re-model!

What can you tell us about the finale?

It's full of surprises and questions that have never been answered in the history of Who, including the Doctor's greatest secret. We're not pretending, we're not kidding, it's actually going to happen. The episode is called The Name of the Doctor and involves our hero in a conflict that is very, very personal to him. Usually he's saving other people, but this time he might be the one who needs to be saved. We'll also find out what makes his new companion so impossible, and there's a surprise that no one has got right so far, and one that will change the course of Who forever!

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS is transmitted at 6:30 tonight, on BBC1 and BBC1 HD.

THE NAME OF THE DOCTOR

The final episode of series 7 is called 'The Name of the Doctor' and now has its own poster to publicise it. Check it out below:

River Song will definitely feature in the episode since Alex Kingston's name appears alongside Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman. What could that tagline possibly mean?

ECCLESTON IN 50TH? QUITE POSSIBLY! *EXCLUSIVE*

An undisclosed source close to the Doctor Who production team indicated to us this morning that Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston may well be seen in the 50th Anniversary special, despite his recent comments to the contrary, and that he could have already filmed his part...!

Eccleston has recently said that he did have a meeting with showrunner Steven Moffat about a possible involvement in the end-of-year spectacular, but came away saying he wouldn't be involved.

However, my tight-lipped source refused to confirm or deny this in a very 'I know something you don't know' manner, which is a very strong pointer towards seeing the Ninth Doctor on our screens, joining Matt Smith and David Tennant.

Tennant, if you remember, recently denied all knowledge and involvement in the same way that Eccleston has.

MIRROR ONLINE CLAIMS ECCLESTON NOT TO RETURN AS NINTH DOCTOR

Eccleston: 'not in the episode'

News just in from Mirror Online: apparently Ninth Doctor Christoper Eccleston has declined to take part in the eagerly anticipated 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, due to air later this year.

"The BBC has confirmed that although the Ninth Doctor thespian met with show runner Steven Moffat last year to discuss potential involvement, the 49-year-old declined to sign up for the project. 'Chris met with Steven Moffat a couple of times to talk about Steven's plans for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary episode,' a spokesperson told Mirror Online. “After careful thought, Chris decided not to be in the episode. He wishes the team all the best."

We're a bit disappointed to hear this news, but are holding on to the possibility that it's a cunning smokescreen designed to keep details of the forthcoming episode under wraps.

PETER JACKSON FOR ... A DALEK

Yep. Peter Jackson has spoken once again of his desire to direct an episode of Doctor Who, naming his fee to be a Dalek.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jackson announced that he met up with the Moff over Christmas and reiterated his no fee claim.

"They don't even have to pay me," he said.

"But I have got my eye on one of those nice new gold-coloured Daleks. They must have a spare one."

Moffat was also asked to comment on Jackson directing an episode.

"We're theoretically on board for anything," he said, "provided we've got a great story."

THE DOCTOR'S GREATEST SECRET REVEALED?

The Moff, along with Matt Smith and Jenna Louise-Coleman have revealed some rather sintillating facts about the upcoming run of episodes and the 50th Anniversary.

Speaking at a Q&A session after an exclusive screening of The Bells of Saint John, Moffat and co. showed their enthusiasm for the second half of series 7 and gave their impressions on the script for the 50th.

On the subject of the 50th Anniversary, Smith said: "You won't be disappointed... I read it and clapped at the end.

I think it's going to be the biggest, the best, the most inventive, the most exciting year for the show."

Moffat, commenting on the 50th, has stopped anybody from giving him a physical copy of the script:

"I'll tell you, one length I've gone to, which I think is a really, really good security measure - I make sure I don't get a script. Because I will lose it. So I forbid people to hand me one." he said.

Coleman was also asked about her thoughts on the anniversary script.

She said: "It really is epic and I think it's really a treat for the fans of the last fifty years."

In further news, Steven Moffat has also announced that River Song (Alex Kingston) will return in series 7b.

He said: "Yes. She will certainly be in this series."

The trio were later asked to elaborate on their personal highlights, to which Smith and Coleman discussed the show's new mosters and guest stars. Moffat however ended the question with a very big boast:

"And the Doctor's greatest secret will be revealed. And actually will. I'm not lying." 

There is a lot going on and, naturally, the hype will only continue to grow. With the 50th Anniversary on the horizon and the new run of episodes starting in two weeks, we're expecting to bring you a TARDIS full of information very soon. As JNT once said. Stay tuned!

CAROLINE SKINNER STEPS DOWN

Caroline Skinner, Executive Producer of Doctor Who has announced today (March 13) that she is leaving the show for a new position in London.

With the second half of series 7 just two weeks away and production of the 50th anniversary special around the corner, Skinner has left her position with immediate effect.

Faith Penhale, BBC Wales' Head of Drama who will be taking over the role said:

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Caroline for her contribution to Doctor Who since taking on the role in 2011, on behalf of both the BBC and the show. She leaves the show in good shape – there's a brilliant series starting on Easter Saturday that will see the official arrival of the Doctor's new companion! And the 50th Anniversary plans are on track to deliver audiences an unmissable event! I wish her all the very best for the future."

Skinner provided her own statement on the news:

"It has been an honour to have been a part of Doctor Who, and a privilege to have worked with Steven Moffat and Matt Smith on this extraordinary show. I have hugely enjoyed my time in BBC Wales and would like to thank Faith Penhale, and our wonderful production team for their unending commitment and brilliance. I will miss them all enormously, but I'm leaving Doctor Who in fine form, with the new series starting at Easter and the fantastic plans for the 50th Anniversary already underway. I am delighted to be now returning to BBC Drama Production in London as an executive producer, and the new opportunities and projects that will bring."

We wish her the best of luck in London.

FIRST FULL LOOK AT THE NEW ICE WARRIORS

Only yesterday did the type40 team bring you the first images of the brand new and revamped Ice Warriors.

Well, the BBC have now released the first full image for the returning monsters and they look fantastic.

Stockier, more menacing and with less fur, these new Ice Warriors will face the Doctor once more in episode three of the new run of episodes.

Although the Moff had previously stated that he didn't like the Ice Warriors, he has since changed his tune and claimed that the episode, written by Mark Gatiss, is "an absolute cracker".

With so much to come this year, we have to say that this looks sure to be a nostalgic highlight.

DOCTOR WHO IN 3D, REECE SHEARSMITH AS PATRICK TROUGHTON AND THE RETURN OF THE ICE WARRIORS

THE DOCTOR IS IN YOUR LIVING ROOM

Doctor Who's 50th anniversary show will be filmed in 3D.

This is the first, and probably one of the more unsurprising announcements to be confirmed by the BBC, as, with the current popularity (apparently) of 3D films and with 3D being used more prominently in television, Doctor Who is the perfect platform to show what this technology can do on the small screen. 

Although most of us here at type40 news whinge and moan non-stop about the onslaught of 3D (they're putting it into our phones now... Why?!), we have to admit that we are rather excited about the TARDIS flying into our living rooms and feeling truly involved in the landmark episode.

Aware of the huge expectation surrounding him, The Moff spoke about the decision to take our favourite Time lord into another dimension:

"It's about time. Technology has finally caught up with Doctor Who and your television is now bigger on the inside."

Whether the use of 3D will add to the experience is yet to be seen but one thing's for sure, we hate those glasses!

MARK GATISS' AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE AND TIME CASTS THE SECOND DOCTOR

As we all know, Mark Gatiss is currently in the process of filming his Doctor Who 50th anniversary biopic and, with David Bradley recently announced to play the first Doctor, it was about time we found time who will be his successor.

Reece Shearsmith, famously known for his work on the League of Gentlemen with Mark Gatiss has been cast as Patrick Troughton in the upcoming drama.

Gatiss recently spoke to the Radio Times about his choice:

"We were in the midst of League of Gentlemen and I just remember thinking, if anyone plays Patrick Troughton, it should be Reece." he said,

"Like the second Doctor, he's small, saturnine and a comic genius. The complete package."

Acting alongside Shearsmith and David Bradley are Brian Cox (BBC Head of Drama Sydney Newman), Jessica Raine (Doctor Who's first producer Verity Lambert), Jeff Rawle (Doctor Who's associate producer Mervyn Pinfield), Jemma Powell (actress Jacqueline Hill) and Claudia Grant (actress Carole Ann Ford).

An Adventure In Space and Time is currently in production with Breaking Bad director Terry McDonough taking the reigns and will coincide with the 50th anniversary show.

THE ICE WARRIORS ARE BACK

Although he's got his hands full with 50th anniversary biopic An Adventure In Space and Time, Mark Gatiss has also found the time to bring back a forgotten foe of the Doctor.

First seen battling Patrick Troughton's second Doctor in 1967's 'The Ice Warriors', the reptilian Martians are making their return in the second half of season 7.

Showrunner Steven Moffat recently admitted that he wasn't sure about the return of the classic monsters:

"I thought they were maybe the default condition for what people thought of as rubbish Doctor Who monsters – they moved very, very slowly and spoke in a way that meant you couldn't understand a word they said."

The Moff eventually came round to Gatiss' pitch insisting that the episode is "an absolute cracker."

The Ice Warriors will make their first appearance since Doctor Who's 2005 revival in the third episode when the seventh series continues on March 30th.

Captain Jack (the spacey, timey-wimey one) has recently spoken to The Los Angeles Times about the Doctor Who 50th anniversary and whether Captain Jack Harkenss will be making a return.

"If there is, I haven't been asked... Personally, as a fan of the show, I would be disappointed if Capt. Jack was not involved."

As with all speculation surrounding the historic show, nothing is being given away.

Everyone at type40 news would enjoy seeing Captain Jack Harkness back on our screens. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

NO ROSE TYLER FOR WHO 50TH

Billie Piper has appeared on The Graham Norton Show where she seemed to make it clear that there would be no return for marmite companion Rose Tyler for the upcoming anniversary.

Rumours of Rose's return to the show began following comments made by Matt Smith last year where he stated that if he were to have any companion from the past, "I would have Rose."

Piper's recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show however crushed any rumours.

"No. I've not been asked... I think Matt Smith said something in passing or in jest like, 'That would be nice, and it became something, but no."

It looks as though Rose will remain in her alternate universe.

FREEMA AGYEMAN RULES OUT MARHTA 50TH RETURN

Freema Agyeman has spoken to Crave Online about her role in the Doctor Who 50th annniversary show. However, she states that there will be no Martha.

"I got misquoted hideously once saying that there are some rumblings going on about being involved in the 50th in terms of drama. It's not." she said.

She continued: "It's in terms of conventions and interviews and things like that, which we're all doing stuff to promote the 50th. We have to. It's the Doctor Who family and we want to."

Again, there is so little known about the 50th anniversary that we won't rule anybody out of returning.

COLIN BAKER DENIES MULTI-DOCTOR STORY

Just as we were getting excited following the rumour of Matt Smith being joined by his seven surviving predecessors, sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, has denied the report.

Almost immediately following the reports, Baker tweeted: "Alas apart from The Big Finish [audio drama] plans I am not aware of any 50th stories nor have I been approached."

One fan tweeted to Baker suggesting that he could be covering up the truth about the anniversary.

Baker responded by tweeting: "There's no point in me tweeting if you don't believe me."

More rumours. More denials. Only the Moff knows what is going to happen.

DAVID BRADLEY TO PLAY FIRST DOCTOR, WILLIAM HARTNELL IN GATISS' AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE AND TIME

Game of Thrones and Harry Potter star David Bradley has been confirmed to portray the First Doctor in Mark Gatiss', An Adventure In Space and Time, a drama focussing on the creation of Doctor Who.

Bradley is no stranger to the world of Doctor Who, having played the space pirate, Solomon in the Chris Chibnall episode, 'Dinosaurs On A Spaceship' and frankly, we think he will do a fine job in bringing the first incarnation of the Doctor to life.

THE MOFF IS AWARE OF THE WEIGHT ON HIS SHOULDERS FOR WHO 50TH

Steven Moffat has spoken about his feelings regarding the Doctor Who 50th anniversary show to the Radio Times. 

Although the interview was more focussed on the fast approaching second half of season 7, Moffat did mention the 50th.

"I'm mostly excited [about the anniversary], a little bit nervous and aware of trying not to let people down."

After a rather lacklustre opening half to the new season, Moffat has some extremely high expectations to satisfy.

MATT SMITH ATTENDS HAND PRINT CEREMONY IN CARDIFF

Matt Smith yesterday (October 12) cemented his place in Doctor Who history at a new 'walk of fame' style ceremony at The Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff.

The hand prints will be used in a new exhibition which has been created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show. Both Smith and current showrunner Steven Moffat attended the event with Moffat also providing his prints.

The exhibition honours past and present stars of the show and will feature a collection of new props, such as captured and chained Weeping Angels from 'The Angels Take Manhattan', and the costume of latest companion, Jenna Louise-Coleman, from the episode, 'Asylum of the Daleks'.

The Doctor Who Experience also takes visitors on a fantastic 3D adventure as they head through a crack in time to help The Doctor. Tickets can be bought from here.
