RATINGS GO UP AT LAST!

With the recent drop in ratings for Doctor Who some fans have begun to question the reason for this decline, citing the popularity of Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi as possible causes. 

The overall figure for Kill the Moon was 6.91 million, once again down on The Caretaker.

Thankfully eight episodes in and things are starting to change. The ratings for Mummy on the Orient Express actually went up. Shown at 8.37 pm (the latest the programme has ever been shown) the overnight ratings were 5.08 million. Much higher than the previous week. Perhaps things are looking up after all.

SERIES EIGHT RATINGS, SO FAR...

Series 8 is polarising the Doctor Who fanbase, with many conflicting views on the various merits of each episode. Despite what the fans are saying, good and bad, the ratings speak for themselves. 

Six episodes in, and Peter Capaldi's début season is holding its own against some stiff competition...

• Deep Breath - 9.17 million viewers in total, with an Audience Appreciation of 82.
• Into the Dalek - 7.29 million viewers in total, with an Audience Appreciation of 84.
• Robot of Sherwood - 7.28 million viewers in total, with an Audience Appreciation of 82.
• Listen - 7.1 million viewers in total, with an Audience Appreciation of 82.
• Time Heist - 6.99 million viewers in total, with an Audience Appreciation of 84.

The Caretaker had 4.89 million viewers in overnight figures, which will almost certainly improve by several million once the final figure is released.

RATINGS OVERVIEW

With only twenty-one days until the final Matt Smith adventure, Radio Times has given us yet another Doctor Who cover. Wow, that's thirteen covers in a month (sort of)! Who would have thought it? Not me. Twenty years ago, when the series was celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, Doctor Who was dead. Even worse, the show was perceived as being shoddy and amateur, with its fans being treated with disdain by the press, especially the BBC. I still have nightmares about  Resistance is Useless and the 'Thoughts of an Anorak'. See below.

It still amazes me that Doctor Who is the most popular drama series in the world. How did this happen?

Onto the ratings...

This week the series was  the highest-rated programme on British television, with a final rating of 12.8 million viewers. It beat Strictly, I'm a Celebrity, Coronation Street and the rest. No bad for a fifty year old show!

Doctor Who was the third most popular progamme (again) on telly last night with 5.7 million viewers (slightly higher than last week). It was beaten by Britain's Got talent (10.5 million viewers) and The Voice (6.7 million viewers).

Daleks? Not a problem. Cybermen. Same goes. But when it comes to Ant and Dec The Doctor may need a bigger sonic screwdriver.  Saturday’s ‘The Rings of Akhaten’ had an audience of 5.5 million, sharing 28.8% of the total TV audience.  Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway topped the list with 7.3 million tuning in, while The Voice came next with 6.4 million viewers.

Once again The Doctor was third place. This perhaps reflects the lighter nights and early time slot, but the dark reach of Ant and Dec should never be underestimated. The final ratings are due to be released next week and are expected to show a notable increase in ratings for those who timeshift. Ant and Dec may have won the battle but will the Doctor win the war.

Still, ‘The Oncoming Storm’ took down Harry Hill again, with Doctor Who winning the time slot against You’ve Been Framed Rides Again! (attracting an audience of 3.4 million). Bow ties beat big lapels!
